Step by Step Guide to Drip Edge Installation
Drip edge is an important component of a roofing system that is installed at the edge of the roof to prevent water from infiltrating under the roofing materials and into the underlying structure. Here’s how to install drip edge:
- Prepare the roof: Before installing the drip edge, ensure that the roof decking is clean, dry, and free from debris. It’s also important to ensure that the roof is properly aligned and that the eaves are level.
- Measure and cut the drip edge: Measure the length of the eaves and gable edges, and cut the drip edge to the appropriate size using tin snips or a similar cutting tool.
- Install the underlayment: Before installing the drip edge, it’s important to install the underlayment, such as felt paper or synthetic underlayment, to provide additional protection against water infiltration.
- Install the drip edge: Starting at one corner of the roof, position the drip edge along the eaves with the flange facing down and the edge of the drip edge extending beyond the edge of the roof. Secure the drip edge to the roof decking with roofing nails or screws, spacing them every 12 to 18 inches.
- Install the gable edge drip edge: Install the gable edge drip edge in the same manner as the eave drip edge, but position it along the gable edge of the roof.
- Overlap the drip edges: Where the drip edges meet at the corners of the roof, overlap the edges by at least 2 inches and secure them with roofing nails or screws.
- Finish the roofing system: Once the drip edge is installed, continue with the installation of the roofing materials, such as shingles or metal panels.
It’s important to work with a professional roofing contractor who is knowledgeable about drip edge installation to ensure that your roofing system is properly protected against water infiltration and other issues. Regular maintenance and inspection of your roofing system can also help to identify potential issues with drip edge and other components before they become more serious problems.
